Carbide chisel carving away stone.

WHY CARBIDE?

Got a hard stone to cut?
Pick up that steel chisel you bought at the local hardware store:
It has a skinny handle, so you have to grip it tightly to control it when you strike the stone.
Take that first swing… did you feel and see the chisel bounce right back at you from the stone?
Now keep swinging and try to cut the stone… tired yet? How’s that stone looking? How does your body feel? I think you and the stone are both tired of fighting.

Now pick up a carbide stone chisel:
Notice it has a bigger grip, this is for your body’s comfort: you don’t have to spend extra energy to grip the handle so tightly because it fits better in your hands natural shape.
Now, take a couple swings at it…you will feel the energy of your blow go into the stones surface and CUT the stone, not bounce back at you.

Carbide reacts to stone much differently than steel because the properties of it allow it to have much less “recoil” than steel, and it keeps its original shape (stays sharp) for much longer.
By using carbide, you are not damaging the stone from excess shock, which causes it to break in the wrong place, and you are cutting the stone much faster. The result of these two factors is that you are reducing fatigue to your body AND you are reducing labor costs.

Carbide tools are an investment and should be treated as such, but once you use a carbide chisel for working hard stone, you won’t go back to inexpensive steel chisels; you will enjoy working with stone more because carbide tools allow you to cut faster and more effectively to produce a better looking final project. Your body will also thank you!
